Heel shapes and styles

Stilettos

What: Yes, stilettos are back. Well, it's not that they ever went anywhere - but they're once again dominating the runways, and that is to say that the chunky-heeled revolution is (for the most part) over. One thing we are seeing though is a hybrid of platform and stiletto: a hidden platform in the front part of the shoe, with a super-tall stiletto heel at the back (as per DSquared2, pictured right).
Seen on: the runways of Balenciaga, Chado Ralph Rucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and DSquared2 to name a few.

Verdict: Stilettos are streamlined, elegant, and sexy. The higher they are, the hotter they look, but of course they don't offer much support for one's feet. Not that ergonomics is really on anyone's mind when they're looking at designer shoes.

Thick, chunky heels

What: Platforms and thick heels have dominated the past few seasons; and a number of the major design houses have seen fit to carry them on for Autumn / Winter 2008.

Seen on: the runways of Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Marni, Chanel.

Verdict: All those sturdy heels we've just invested in shouldn't go to waste too soon - despite the return of the more graceful stiletto. The definite advantage of shoes with a thick heel is that they're better to walk in; so make the most while you can.

Tapered heels

What: Heels that start thick at the top and taper down, often with a curve, into a stiletto-esque point at the bottom.

Seen on: the likes of Burberry Prorsum, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Zac Posen.

Verdict: They're a sexy, interesting and modern style which can really spice up an outfit. Not as much a classic shape, so buy them if you intend to get a lot of wear out of them over the next few seasons.

Toe shapes

Squared-off toes

What: It's been a while since square toed shoes have been popular... and it's now their time to return. Before we all start having nightmares of those awful clunky dramatically-square shoes that were cool way back when, take note on the new squared-off shape. It's a tapered in toe with a short blunt nose - rather than a fully squared toe.

Seen on: the runways of Calvin Klein, Marni, Christian Dior, Prada.

Verdict: A nice, modern alternative to the lady-like round-toe; edgy, but not as harsh as a sharp point. A subtle squared-off toe is a great option in 2008.

Styles, materials, and details

Above the knee boots

What: Every socialite and off-duty model was photographed in her over-the-knee quilted Chanel boots last year. This year, above the knee boots are most popular in heeled versions (rather than small or flat heels) with suede the material of choice.

Seen on: Badgley Mischka, Akris, Fendi.

Verdict: Hot. Perfect over tights, long socks, jeans or pants.

Lace-up Shoes and Boots

What: Laces and tie-up details are another continuing trend in 2008.

Seen on: The runways of Alexander McQueen, Bottega Venetta, Derek Lam, Dolce and Gabanna, Donna Karan, Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld, Prada.

Verdict: From Victorian influences to sexed-up school mistress heels, laces are lingering for a little longer and offer quite a few options of styles and heel-hights.

Mary-Jane with a Twist

What: The high-heeled Mary-Jane was a big shoe trend last year; but they were mostly sleek, feminine styles in patent leathers and with rounded toes. 2008 sees Mary-Jane back with a twist; or, lost of twists as seen down the runway. Double or even triple buckles are one common defining detail; bright colours, luxe fabrics or sharply pointed toes are other examples. Whatever it may be, the bottom line is it must stand out.

Seen on: 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alberta Ferreti, Chanel, Dell'Acqua, Marni, Versace, Zac Posen.

Verdict: High-heeled Mary-Janes strike a combination of school-girl sweet meets sexy vamp. Look for the interesting details which set apart the hottest buckled and strapped pumps of 2008.

Reptile leathers

What: Alligator, crocodile, lizard, snake... reptilian skins are a major trend choice for 2008's footwear.

Seen on: Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren, Derek Lam, Cavalli, YSL and more.

Verdict: The feeling of reptile leather is that of something exotic and luxurious. In 2008 its use is in the most classic of ways; subtle, refined and yet bold. Avoid gaudy snake prints and cheap imitations; whether real or faux, it's all about the quality.

Fringing and Folk-Inspired

What: It's the new foho: folk-inspired with an ethnic twist. Fringed boots are the defining feature of the trend, with other details like studs and tooled leather adding to the crafty, bohemian feel.

Seen on: Gucci, Balmain, Anna Sui.

Verdict: Short fringed ankle-boots in leather or suede can look sexy with bare legs or tights. They can add a ruffian charm to a sophisticated outfit, or be thrown together with an everyday outfit for casual chic.

Open-toe shoes with tights

What: It used to be a massive faux-pas, but these days it's not just OK - it's fashionable. Open-toes or peep-toes with stockings, socks or tights underneath.

Seen on: The 2008 runways of Calvin Klein, Burberry Prorsum, Donna Karan, Valentino.

Verdict: Works wonderfully with like colours, especially black on black - but daring contrasts can also look great. It also means your Spring / Summer shoe collection can be worn in the colder months.

Colours

Two-tone and multi-colour

What: There's no excuse to be boring with your shoes when it comes to colour. At least, not anymore. The Autumn / Winter 2008 runways had barely a plain shoe in sight, with two-toned or multiple color taking over. Different elements of a shoe can be different colours, for example contrasting straps or heels.

Seen on: 3.1 Phillip Lim, Balenciaga, Alessandro Dell'Aqua, Chanel, Christian Dior, Dries Van Noten, Marni, Prada, Valentino.

Verdict: Don't think that a multi-coloured shoe can only be worn with a plain coloured outfit; use them to add colour and style to pretty much anything. For the colours themselves, they can be anything from bold bright colours through to classic shades of grey and black.

Harajuku Fashion's Origin

Harajuku fashion gets its name from the Harajuku district of Tokyo. All the switched-on harajuku kids go there to explore the many clothes shops and gather Yoyogi park, the cafes in Omotesando street or on the way to the Meiji shrine to display their latest harajuku creations for tourists as well as for their friends.

Harajuku became famous in the 1980s due to the street performers and wildly-dressed teens who gathered there on Sundays when Omotesando was closed to traffic. Omotesando is a very long street with cafes and upscale fashion boutiques popular with residents and tourists alike. Once it became pedestrianised on sundays it was the perfect place to meet, play music and show off!

Having a regular meeting place for art, conversation and performance gave rise to the vibrant Hokoten band scene. This was stopped at the end of the 1990s and the number of performers, Visual Kei fans, rockabilly dancers and punks has steadily decreased since. Today on Sundays one can see many Gothic Lolita as well as many foreign tourists taking pictures of them on the way to Meiji Shrine. Some tourists are surprised to see such a large exhibition of Japanese youth dressed up in often shocking outfits.

For fall 2009 the Louis Vuitton Shoe Collection is filled with platform heeled shoes and boots that are turning heads with artistic heels. Many of the styles tied around the front of the ankle which kinda reminds me of harjuku fashions of Japan. Optimistis-Maksimalis, Pesimistis-Minimalis (Realistis)?

Saya pernah punya pengalaman, yang membuat saya berpikir, bagaimanakah pola pikir yang harus dipakai seseorang dan target yang harus dipakai dalam menghadapi sebuah kompetisi atau tantangan?
Dua tahun ini, saya mengikuti kompetisi di kampus. Kompetisi yang sama, dengan kompetitor yang secara kualitas juga sama, namum dengan hasil dan pendekatan pola pikir, dan tim yang berbeda. Kompetisi yang saya ikuti adalah festival akustik. Oiya, posisi saya selama dua tahun ini boleh dikatakan sama, dalam artian bahwa band juga organisasi, bisa dikatakan bahwa saya adalah pemimpin dari masing-masing band, karena saya yang menentukan lagu apa yang akan dibawakan (belum tentu memilih, terkadang yang lain memilih, tapi tetap saya yang menentukan), beserta aransemen-aransemen dasarnya.
Pada tahun pertama, dengan grup A, saya mengambil pola pikir optimistis dalam artian bahwa grup kita akan lolos penyisihan dan paling tidak berada dalam urutan tiga besar di final(bentuk kompetisi berupa penyisihan selama beberapa sesi dari puluhan tim peserta untuk merebut delapan tiket final, yang penilaian untuk mencari juara kompetisi dilakukan pada saat final). Saya mengambil pola pikir itu bukan tanpa alasan, karena saya tahu kualitas tim yang saya, dan punya materi untuk menghadapi kompetisi yang sudah saya yakini juga mampu untuk paling tidak menembus babak final. Tindak lanjut dari pola pikir itu, kita hanya berlatih saja, dengan target main sebaik mungkin, tanpa begitu memperhatikan faktor-faktor non-teknis. Hasilnya? Kita main bagus, bersih, namun lolos dari babak penyisihan pun tidak. Hasilnya, karena kita pasang target yang cukup tinggi (sekali lagi, karena kita tahu kualitas kita, dan penonton yang kritis pun mengakui, bahwa kita seharusnya masuk final) kita benar-benar merasa jatuh.
Pada tahun berikutnya, saya ikut lagi kompetisi itu, dengan grup yang berbeda. Secara kualitas sama, bedanya hanya grup A sudah pernah tampil dalam satu grup yang utuh sebelum festival ini, sedangkan grup B ini benar-benar merupakan grup yang benar-benar baru, meskipun dengan orang-orang yang telah berkecimpung di dunia musik kampus. Berdasarkan pengalaman (dari hal lain tahun sebelumnya) saya mengambil pola pikir pesimistis, atau katakanlah realistis (berdasarkan saran dari salah satu penulis buku tentang kesuksesan, bahwa kata realistis lebih baik daripada pesimistis atau minimalis) dalam menghadapi festival ini, dengan tidak memasang target muluk, yaitu memasang target realistis hanya menghibur penonton serta menunjukkan suatu konsep grup akustik yang belum pernah ada di kampus. Selain target realistis, kita juga memasang target tertinggi lolos ke final, meskipun kita juga pesimistis tentang target tertinggi itu. Kita memasang target itu, karena kita tahu tipe grup seperti apa yang diprioritaskan untuk lolos final (lebih mengutamakan full-band yang lolos final, sedangkan grup B hanya terdiri dari tiga orang saja). Namun, dengan pola pikir ini ditambah tahu dengan prioritas juri, saya justru dituntut untuk menjadi kreatif, dalam artian bahwa grup B meskipun menempatkan diri dalam posisi underdog, namun tetap harus menunjukkan sesuatu yang paling tidak akan dibicarakan (yang baik-baik tentunya, hehehe) oleh orang lain. Selama beberapa minggu, kita dituntut untuk terus kreatif, untuk memikirkan apa saja hambatan grup kita dan cara memecahkannya, serta terus memikirkan cara untuk menunjang performance kita. Singkat kata, setelah proses yang cukup melelahkan selama beberapa minggu (sampai-sampai penulis kurang tidur n mengalami penurunan berat badan :p), grup kita lolos babak penyisihan dan memenangkan festival tersebut. Dan karena kita memasang target yang minimalis, kebanggan kita jadi berlipat ganda
Dari pengalaman dua tahun tersebut, saya mengambil kesimpulan, bahwa dalam menghadapi sebuah tantangan, lebih baik kita memakai pola pikir pesimistis dan target minimalis (sekali lagi, memang lebih enak memakai kata target dan pola pikir realistis, namun saya hanya menggambarkan seperti apa tepatnya yang saya lakukan). Karena menurut saya, apabila kita memakai pola pikir itu, kita akan dituntut untuk kreatif, dan mengambil sudut pandang dengan lebih besar, dengan harapan kita juga mendapatkan sudut pandang permasalahan dengan lebih besar pula, sehingga kita bisa mengantisipasi masalah-masalah tersebut untuk mengoptimalkan usaha kita untuk melebihi target kita. Dan apabila kita benar melebihi target, kita akan merasakan kepuasan yang lebih tinggi.
Namun,permasalahan selanjutnya yang penulis sadari, apakah semua orang dapat menerapkan pola pikir diatas? Karena setau saya ada orang jika diberitahu bahwa target kita minimalis (realistis!!!) maka orang akan menganggap bahwa kita hanya akan bekerja seadanya untuk mencapai target tersebut, lagipula masih ada idiom “Pasang cita-citamu setinggi langit”. Selain itu, bagaimana jika kita menerapkan pola pikir pesimistis pada orang yang berkepribadian negatif? Apakah tidak akan menimbulkan masalah? Inilah yang saya harapkan dapat di-share dengan para pembaca sekalian.
Oiya, mungkin ada beberapa pihak yang terkait dengan pengalaman saya diatas membaca catatan ini. Saya tidak bermaksud menyerang siapa-siapa. Lalu saya juga tidak bermaksud membangga-banggakan diri dengan menulis ilustrasi diatas, apalagi ‘merasa pantas’ bahwa grup A seharusnya lolos penyisihan. Saya hanya berusaha mengilustrasikan setepat mungkin tentang kejadian yang membuat saya punya pola pikir seperti ini.
FYI, pada saat ini, penulis apabila menghadapi suatu tantangan akan menghadapinya dengan memasang pola pikir pesimistis, dan memasang target realistis dan target maksimalis(yang walaupun namanya maksimalis, namun karene berpola pikir pesimistis, tetap saja targetnya tidak terlalu tinggi :p)

Udah berapa kali aku denger istilah harp-guitar / harpoguitar, dari situs progarchives.com maupun penjelasan instrumen yang dipakai oleh band progressive dari Indonesia, DISCUS. Tapi pertama kali ngliat bentuknya baru pas disodorin videonya Andy McKee di lagu Gates of Gnomeria. Awalnya sih nggak ngeh kalo itu yang namanya harp – guitar, n blm ngrasa kalo itu instrumen yang unik abis. Tapi setelah ndengerin lagu Andy McKee yang lainnya (The Friends I Never Met, pake harp – guitar juga) dan pengen banget bisa maenin lagu itu, baru deh sadar btapa uniknya instrumen itu, plus bener2 bikin mupeng banget, pengen punya!!! Hehe. At least, pengennya ntar kalo udah punya rumah pengen bikin custom-made harp – guitar but hiasan di rumah :p

Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel

In his 25 years as creative director of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld has not only safeguarded the towering legacy of Coco Chanel but has also enhanced it by turning the house into one of the most powerful and profitable brands in the world. When Lagerfeld joined Chanel in 1983 to design haute couture, his résumé was already impressive; he was serving simultaneously as creative director of Chloé and Fendi. The only label to have designed wedding dresses for both Jackie O. and J. Lo, Valentino is synonymous with opulence, extravagance, and drama. Fashion Designer Christian Dior (1905-1957) was born in Normandy, France. At his parents' insistence, he studied political science. After military service and several years of indecision, he returned to Paris in 1935 and began his design career by selling sketches. His hat designs were initially more successful than his dress designs. But he concentrated on his dress designs and was hired by Robert Piguet in 1938. During the war, he served in the South of France, then returned again to Paris in 1941 and worked for Lucien Lelong, a much larger design house. In 1946, he was able to open his own house, backed by textile manufacturer Marcel Boussac.

For his first collection in 1947, he created the extremely popular "New Look", which featured rounded shoulders, a cinched waist, and a very full skirt. Dior created an opulent clothing style which contrasted the severe living conditions of post-war France. After the war, he helped to re-establish Paris as the capital of world-fashion . Dior became the last great dictator of style in the 1950s. Each collection throughout this period had a theme - classic suits, ballerina-length skirts, the H-line in 1954, and A- and Y-lines in 1955.

Together with his partner Jaques Rouet, Dior was the pioneer for license agreements in the fashion business. Already in 1948, he decided to arrange licensed production of furs, socks, ties, perfumes, and clothing in regionally seperate production centers. Thus spreading the brand name quickly around the globe.

In 1953, he hired Yves Saint Laurent as an assistant. After Dior's sudden death in October 1957 in Italy, Saint Laurent became head designer and introduced the trapeze dress in his first collection for the house. When Saint Laurent was called for military duty in 1960, Marc Bohan took over, remaining until Gianfranco Ferre became designer in 1989. Ferre is to be replaced by the end of 1996.

After much talk about possible successors of Ferre, it has been confirmed in October 1996, that John Galliano will take his place as chief designer for Dior. Galliano, known as the current enfant terrible of the fashion business was responsible for Givenchy for two seasons before switching to Dior. It is believed that Dior's parent-company LVMH wants rejuvenate Dior's appearence, hoping it will create an equally astonishing run on Dior products like Tom Ford created for Gucci. Indeed, Galliano's appraoch to fashion resembles Dior's intention when he started in 1947. In contrast to Chanel for example, Dior established a romantic and very feminine look, which emphasised luxury rather than comfort. Galliano, as Dior's successor, creates an equally feminine style, blending today's freedom of expression with the reminiscence of past opulence.
